Doctors and pilots from Izmir are in organic olive oil market with “ORIO”.

All from Izmir, 3 captain pilots, a doctor and an accountancy advisor, 5 pals invested their money in organic olive oil production. The project, having started as a hobby to get rid of the weariness due to the life in the metropolis, is now a serious investment.

Dr. Alper Demirarslan stated that they started their project in 2005 within the Framework of Foresting and Control of Erosion Campaign Action Plan by the Ministry of Forestry, in an approximately 800 sqm field in Karaburun, where there was no cultivation of any kind before, which is an ideal land for olive production thanks to the climate, soil and moisture. He added that the soil in the field had been refined and analyzed; afterwards, organic olive saplings were planted. There were some olive trees in the field which remained from the Greek rule of the area, and which were not rejuvenated. We showed great care for the protection of these trees as well.

He has also stated that they have 2 huge reservoirs of 1600 tones of capacity, and they water the field by means of dripping technique.

Dr. Demirarslan, stating that they have been the pioneers of organic olive oil production in Karaburun region, mentioned that there would be around 1 million olive trees in a couple of years in this region and Karaburun would be one of the most important regions in the production of organic olive oil production.

He has stated that there are 17.500 trees in their field, and they have had a test production of 2,5 tones of olive oil, (0.4 acidity). Demirarslan has also mentioned that as it was early harvesting, they had a high-aroma content olive oil, which they will start to produce at a yearly increasing volume.

Demirarslan explained that they were taking care of the trees as if they were their children, and by avoiding heat in the production process, and via the cold-pressing method, they place high importance to pluck the olives to be pressed within a couple of hours before the process would take place. He also stated that their principle was to produce organic olive oil through natural means as if it is produced from the same trees of the same yard.

Demirarslan has stated that the amount of olive production is around 20 kg per tree in Turkey, whereas it is around 100 kg per tree in Spain. He has declared that their goal is to raise this amount to that of Europe and help bring Turkish olive oil to the level that it really deserves to be in the world.
